You don’t have to be an art expert to commission art
Commissioning a painting might sound like something reserved for art collectors or interior designers, but really, it’s for anyone with a story they deem worthy enough to tell. Whether it’s a place or pet that holds a special memory or a moment you want to look at every time you walk through the door, a custom painting is a way to make that story visible.
In this post, I’ll walk through the art commission process, providing some clarity around what to expect so that commissioning art can be seen as a joyful and exciting act for yourself or a loved one.
More than a painting
The paintings that I most enjoy creating are the pieces with a story full of love and memory attached to them—a pet who has just passed, a heart-shaped tree outside the window of a cancer treatment center, or a childhood home being put on the market after 35 years.
Theoretically, to be an expert in the art industry, one must have developed a critical eye based on their experience, education, and the large amount of artwork they consume on a daily basis—but I would argue that experience, exposure, and education can’t replace the basic need we all have in common for personal storytelling, companionship, and celebration for what makes up our very own lives. No matter the context, commissioned art is about preserving meaning and turning it into something tangible.
What to expect when we work together
Commissioning an art piece can be an intimidating thought, looking at it from the outside in. Questions such as not knowing what size to get, feeling intimidated by “art speak”, or not being able to describe what you want painted could be such a barrier that you never even consider engaging. That’s why I’m here—to translate the art world and process into an easy and enjoyable experience from start to finish. My job as the artist in a commissioned exchange is to guide the process. Your job is to bring your story or idea. I’ll shape the rest.
My process is laid out in phases, with the goal being to structure the process to be as seamless as possible. I’ll do all the heavy lifting—you just show up with your idea.
Discovery + Understanding: We’ll start by getting to know your goals, vision, ideas. Whatever the subject matter may be, I want to understand the story behind the visual. This step usually involves a quick chat.
Research + Concept: Once I have a clear understanding of your project, I’ll dive into research and brainstorming. This means collecting any reference photos, and exploring styles, color palettes, and initial concepts in sketch format. I’ll then put together ideas or mood boards to make sure we’re on the same page before moving forward.
Design + Creation: This is where the magic happens! I’ll start creating based on the approved concept/sketch and I’ll keep you updated along the way. I love feedback, so don’t hesitate to share your thoughts — we’ll work together to make sure it feels right.
Refine + Finalize: Once the paintings are ready, I’ll refine and polish them based on your feedback, perfecting the details. I’ll do my best to make sure you walk away with something you absolutely love.
Delivery: Once everything is finalized, I’ll mail off your painting for you to unbox and enjoy! And I’m always happy to answer questions afterward.
Tips to make the experience smooth and enjoyable
Commissioning a painting should feel like an unfolding story—the best results come when you approach it with openness and curiosity. Sharing your stories, photos, or even small details that hold meaning for you early in the process can be helpful; the more I understand the heart behind your commission, the more personal the finished piece will be.
It also helps to trust the creative journey. I’ll guide you through every stage, but leaving room for creative interpretation means I can give your piece its own unique life. And if you’re commissioning for a special occasion, be sure to reach out early so there’s plenty of time for thoughtful creation. Most importantly—ask questions whenever they come up. There are no wrong or silly questions!
Your Story on Canvas — Submit Your Idea
Here's a fun spin on the traditional commission process: if you have a photograph, a memory, or a moment that you’ve always imagined as a painting, I’d love to see it: through my new initiative,Your Story on Canvas. With this form, you can share your image and the story behind it.
Each month, I’ll choose one submission that inspires me to bring it to life in paint. If your story is selected, you’ll have the first opportunity to purchase the finished piece before it’s released to the public. It’s a chance to see your personal history transformed into art—and maybe even hang it on your own wall. Submit your image and story here to get started!
